Modern Foreign Languages Y3 to Y6

French

Curriculum Intent:

At Shenton Primary School, our aim is to develop a love for learning languages. We teach themed French units that are planned using a progressive knowledge and skills-based curriculum that culminates the end of key stage National Curriculum outcomes.

Children in Key Stage 2 will have the opportunity to study topics that are relevant and purposeful to make connections to what they already know, equipping them with basic conversational French and to equip them for language learning in secondary school. They will work towards becoming fluent and ambitious speakers of French. In each year group (KS2), the sequence of learning ensures children will develop and consolidate an understanding of a range of vocabulary, oracy, literacy and intercultural understanding, knowledge about language and language learning strategies. This sequence of learning links to Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction and the Generative Learning approach.

Curriculum Implementation:

We have adopted a scheme - La Jolie Ronde - which breaks down National Curriculum targets into smaller, systematic steps. The blocked themes allow the children to apply their knowledge of language and phoneme development from EYFS, immersing themselves in ‘learning language again’. The topics are relevant and purposeful, where some topics correlate with celebrations such as Christmas and Easter. The overall structure ensures that children are able to retrieve prior learning and apply it to their new learning, for example: in Y3 they learn numbers to 10 and to say their age; in Y4 they learn numbers to 31 and to say when their birthday is; in Y5 they revisit numbers to 31 and learn to say time.

Curriculum Impact:

MFL is assessed according to our key knowledge and progression matrix document that allows progression according to national curriculum outcomes for KS2.

During lessons, ongoing assessment for learning takes place by class teachers reflecting on the children’s learning and assessing their understanding. Key skills and understanding of learning are assessed to meet every child’s needs and to address misconceptions. Class teachers and subject leaders then discuss the assessments made termly in ‘Curriculum Team Meetings’ and end of year predictions are recorded on Target Tracker in Spring 2. Strengths and areas for development are discussed and reviewed, as well as observations, learning walks, pupil voice and book monitoring taking place. From this, key aspects are addressed and evaluated to ensure the employment of any resourcing, CPD and subject-specific developments to further enhance the teaching and learning of MFL across KS2.
